Ordinary People

Eduardo Roy Jr.'s 2016 Filipino film follows Jane, sixteen, and her boyfriend Aries, living on the streets of Manila. They get by as pickpockets; shortly after their baby is born the child is stolen, and the couple set out to find it. The formal choice is to set security camera footage and television programmes inside the story: the couple go on a reality programme to get help, and their tragedy becomes broadcast material. That builds the criticism of media directly. Hasmine Killip's performance was awarded. The story is merciless and offers relief at no point. Who it's for: viewers interested in Philippine independent cinema and films about urban poverty. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a hopeful close, or avoiding content involving danger to a child.
