What Lonelyhearts Is About
Adam White takes over a newspaper’s advice column and works out too late that it is not an opportunity but a trap laid by his editor Shrike, whose pleasure is watching the people under him break. The more seriously he takes the pain in the letters, the worse things get for the job and for himself, and his meeting with Faye Doyle, worn down by her husband, closes the trap. The film comes from Nathanael West’s 1933 novel Miss Lonelyhearts by way of Howard Teichmann’s Broadway adaptation. Montgomery Clift plays it opposite Robert Ryan and Myrna Loy, and Maureen Stapleton, in her first film, was nominated for an Academy Award.
