What Angel Is About

Angel was a box office flop for Ernst Lubitsch and Marlene Dietrich despite strong reviews, with Variety calling it one of the best films Lubitsch had made; that commercial failure, alongside Knight Without Armor the same year, contributed to Paramount buying out Dietrich's contract and to exhibitors branding her "box office poison" in 1938, a slump she didn't shake until 1939's Destry Rides Again. Who it's for: anyone curious about an example of the "Lubitsch touch" and a genuine turning point box office failure in a star's career. Who it's not for: viewers wanting an uninterrupted success story, since the film's real interest lies precisely in that unexpected downturn.
