Lonesome

Craig Boreham's 2023 Australian film follows Casey, who flees to Sydney after an incident in his country town. He has no money and knows nobody; a closeness forms with Tib, whom he meets in the city, but neither knows how to sustain it. The subject is shame. Casey counts as having been driven out of where he came from and tells nobody; he can manage intimacy but not continuity. The narrative shows this not as a fault of character but as a learned reflex. Boreham films the sex without covering it and the scenes are explicit, but they function as the characters' way of communicating rather than as display. Josh Lavery leads. Sydney here is isolating rather than liberating. Who it's for: those who like Australian independent cinema and queer drama. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with explicit sexual content; the film uses it often and directly.
