What Lost in La Mancha Is About
Terry Gilliam had wanted to make a Don Quixote film for years and finally started in 2000. A documentary crew came to the set to shoot behind-the-scenes material and within six days had made an entirely different film: NATO jets turn out to fly low beside the location, a flash flood carries away the sets and equipment, the colour of the ground changes in a day, and Jean Rochefort, playing Quixote, becomes too ill to ride. In the end the insurers take possession of the project. Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe thereby recorded something rare in film history: a picture coming apart during production. Gilliam was only able to finish the same project seventeen years later. Who it is for: anyone curious about how films are made and how they fail. Who it is not for: viewers who want to watch an adaptation of Don Quixote, since that film is not here.
