What The Bad Kids Is About

In the middle of the Mojave Desert, in Yucca Valley, there is a continuation high school for teenagers close to dropping out for good. The principal, Vonda Viland, phones her students at first light to ask whether they can get to school, and if they cannot she drives out and collects them. Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe follow three of them across a year: Lee, who has a small son and is supporting his family; Jennifer, who has nobody backing her effort; and Joey, dealing with drugs and with a household that will not hold still. The film promises no miracle and delivers no lecture. It took a special jury award for verite filmmaking at Sundance in 2016.
