What Lost in Siberia Is About
Andrei Miller, a British archaeologist working in Iran, is seized and arrested, taken for a spy and sent to a camp in Siberia. The rest of the film is about the condition of prisoners under Stalin, and it does not dress any of it up. Aleksandr Mitta shot the production entirely in Russia, on location and at Mosfilm, finishing post-production in London. Anthony Andrews takes the lead, with Valentin Gaft and Elena Mayorova alongside him. Britain submitted it for the foreign film Oscar for 1992. What happens inside the camp is built on survival rather than heroism.
