What Shine, Shine, My Star Is About
In 1920, in a small provincial town, power keeps changing hands between reds, whites and greens. Volodya Iskremas, a self-taught man of the theatre, is trying to stage a tragedy about Joan of Arc in the middle of it and dreams of rebuilding theatre to fit the new age. While everyone around him wants only to drown their gloom, he keeps asking what art is for at a time like this. In Aleksandr Mitta’s film Oleg Tabakov plays Iskremas, Evgeni Leonov the man who runs a picture show, and Oleg Efremov a painter. It is counted among Mitta’s best work and is about an artist’s position when everything around him has come apart.
