Lost on Everest

On 8 June 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine were seen for the last time about 250 metres below the summit of Everest. Mallory's body was found in 1999; Irvine's has still never turned up. If the camera he was carrying were recovered, it might settle whether the two of them reached the top, which would rewrite the history of mountaineering. In 2019 a team went looking for Irvine with a new estimate of where he lies. Renan Öztürk and Drew Pulley's National Geographic documentary follows that search. The team does not find him, and the film is less interested in finding than in the searching itself, and in what the mountain has become now that so many people are on it.
