What Explorer: The Last Tepui Is About
Taylor Rees and Renan Ozturk's 2022 documentary follows an expedition to the flat-topped mountains of South America known as tepuis. Because these high plateaus are separated from their surroundings by sheer walls, the life on top of them has been isolated for millions of years, and the biologist Bruce Means searches these places for new species of frog. Means is in his seventies and cannot climb the wall himself; the climbing team has to carry him up on ropes. That is where the documentary becomes interesting: at its centre is not the climb but an old scientist completing his last field work. Alex Honnold is on the team. The images are striking while the storytelling follows the familiar National Geographic shape. Who it's for: viewers who like nature and expedition documentaries. Who it's not for: anyone expecting scientific depth; the film leans to the adventure side.
