What Lou Reed's Berlin Is About
When Lou Reed recorded Berlin in 1973 the critics tore it apart, and for thirty-three years afterwards he never performed the album in full. In the meantime the verdict reversed and it came to be counted among his best work. In December 2006 a fully staged version ran for five nights at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, and Julian Schnabel filmed it. That dark sequence of songs about jealousy, rage and loss went down as a late vindication. Ellen Kuras shot it, and Antony and Sharon Jones appear on stage alongside Reed.
