Love in Rome

A young writer from an impoverished noble family becomes taken with a woman who wants to be an actress. She pays no attention to the rules, and her curiosity drives her from one adventure to the next; he cannot keep up with that pace. The film gives the relationship not as a love story but as the collision of two different speeds. The account does not judge the woman morally, nor put the man’s expectations in the right. The Rome of 1960, its film world and its night life form the ground of the story. The writer’s never being able to get on with his work runs as a second line. The difference of class between them stays visible throughout. Mylene Demongeot and Peter Baldwin appear in Dino Risi’s hundred and four minute Italian film, completed in 1960.
