Lucky Chan-sil

Kim Cho-hee's 2020 Korean film follows Chan-sil, a producer left without work when the director she worked with for years dies. She is forty, has no money, no home and knows nothing outside cinema. She takes a job cleaning at an actor's house. The director produced Hong Sang-soo's films for years and this comes out of that experience; her view of the film world is from inside and mocking. A ghost who says he is Leslie Cheung enters the story, and that strangeness sets the tone. Kang Mal-geum's performance is calm. Youn Yuh-jung's landlady gives the film weight. The story is without incident. Who it's for: viewers who like Korean independent cinema and films about cinema. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot, or who cannot follow references to the film world.
