Lucy Shimmers and the Prince of Peace

Five year old Lucy is admitted to hospital with pneumonia shortly before Christmas. On the same ward is Edgar, waiting for a kidney transplant and pushed to the bottom of the list because of his criminal record. The child and the man become friends, and the film turns on that pair. It is openly a faith film and never pretends otherwise: forgiveness, mercy and prayer are its direct subjects. Rob Diamond wrote and directed, with his own daughter Scarlett Diamond as Lucy. It came out on 19 October 2020. What works is Edgar. A man with a record noticing that nobody in the corridor looks at him lands harder than any of the child's cheerfulness. Its flaws: the budget is low and it shows, the supporting characters serve one function each, and the message is spoken aloud by the characters. It never steps outside the faith film template. Who it is for: viewers who like Christian family films and Christmas stories. Who it is not for: anyone uncomfortable with an explicit religious message.
