The King of Kings

Charles Dickens tells his son the life of Jesus. The boy, with his cat, steps inside the story, and the narrative runs on two layers: a Victorian house and the events being told. Jang Seong-ho wrote and directed. The source is The Life of Our Lord, which Dickens wrote only for his own children and which was published long after his death. The voice cast is large: Kenneth Branagh as Dickens, Oscar Isaac as Jesus, Pierce Brosnan as Pilate, Mark Hamill as Herod, Ben Kingsley as Caiaphas, Forest Whitaker as Peter and Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens. It was produced in Korea and distributed in America by Angel Studios on 11 April 2025. The numbers are notable: for an independent animation it took over 80 million dollars, well beyond expectation. Reviews were mixed; the animation was praised while the telling was called too cautious. Who it is for: anyone after religious storytelling and animation to watch with family. Who it is not for: viewers wanting a detached historical account; the film speaks from inside belief.
