What Lullaby of the Earth Is About
In the nineteen thirties an orphaned girl is growing up in the mountains with an elderly relative. When her grandmother dies she is left with no defence against the greed and the deceit of the world outside, and she is sold to a brothel on a small island in the inland sea. Because of her age she is not put to work there herself but kept on as a helper to the women. What the film covers from there is a child being drawn, little by little, into the workings of the system that is crushing her. The account is not asking for pity; it shows how that system is built. Mieko Harada plays the lead in Yasuzo Masumura’s hundred and eleven minute Japanese film, completed in 1976.
