What The Duke of Burgundy Is About

The relationship between a butterfly specialist and the younger woman who does the housework rests on a script repeated every day. Who wrote it, and who is pleasing whom, is not what it first appears. The film uses repetition deliberately: the same scene returns with small changes and the fatigue accumulates inside the relationship. The narrative shows above all how much labour sustaining a role takes. Peter Strickland wrote and directed, with Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D'Anna. There are no male characters at all. A real warning: the film is built on a power relationship and the sexual content is handled openly. It is not graphic to look at; it is explicit as a subject.
