What Elisa & Marcela Is About

In Galicia at the start of the twentieth century, two women who love each other decide that one will apply to the church under a male identity so they can marry. The ceremony takes place, and then the town finds out. The film gives its first half to the building of the relationship and its second to the flight. The narrative does not turn the episode into a story of heroism; it shows how much narrower the two women's lives become afterwards. Isabel Coixet directed. It is shot in black and white and follows events that really happened in Spain in 1901. Before watching: there are explicit sex scenes. The ending also follows what is known of the real outcome, and it is not a happy one.
