Maamannan

Maamannan, directed by Mari Selvaraj, is a Tamil political drama about a legislator from an oppressed community and his son standing up against the privileged, arrogant son of another politician, framed around caste discrimination. Director Selvaraj has said he conceived the film explicitly as a response to the 1992 film Thevar Magan, whose narrative glorifying the dominant caste unsettled him; lead actor Vadivelu, who thirty one years earlier played a submissive servant in Thevar Magan, this time plays a Dalit politician. Producer and actor Udhayanidhi Stalin announced he was retiring from acting after being sworn in as Tamil Nadu's Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports around the film's release, making it his final acting role. The film won Vadivelu Best Actor at both the Chennai International Film Festival and the 2023 Filmfare Awards. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Tamil political drama, a direct response to caste discrimination, in which an actor who once played a submissive servant in a caste glorifying film thirty one years earlier now plays a Dalit politician. Who it's not for: those wanting a purely entertainment focused film free of political messaging, since some critics noted its political correctness overtakes the story.
