What MacArthur Is About

The film takes the general's life from 1942, beginning with the defeat and evacuation in the Philippines, through to his removal from command during the Korean War, told in flashback from a visit to West Point. One correction is needed: the source text dates the dismissal to 1952, while Truman relieved him in April 1951. Gregory Peck plays it with grave respect, and the film generally stays close to the man's own account, leaving the heaviest criticisms of him outside the frame. Its producer had also made Patton, and a similar success was clearly the aim.
