What Macbeth Is About
Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is told by three witches that he will one day be King of Scotland. Ambition and his wife’s insistence combine, he commits the treason, takes the crown for himself, and from there one murder keeps requiring the next. Orson Welles directed it and played Macbeth, completing the production very fast and very cheaply on studio sets. The result is not lavish but it is extremely dark: a foggy, rocky, almost cavernous Scotland. Faithful to the text and bold in its form.
