What Mad Hot Ballroom Is About
Eleven-year-old children in New York public schools spend ten weeks learning ballroom dance: merengue, rumba, tango, foxtrot. Most of them start out treating it as beneath them, and as the citywide competition approaches it stops being a joke. While it films the dancing, the documentary is also recording what the children say for themselves, and their neighbourhoods, families, fears and plans come out through that. Marilyn Agrelo shows how the programme actually runs while placing three very different parts of New York side by side. She never dresses the children up to talk like adults and never invites pity for them. Winning matters, but what the film really documents is what happens to a child who is taken seriously.
