What Made in England: The Films of Powell and Pressburger Is About
David Hinton's 2024 documentary examines the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger through Martin Scorsese's account of them. Scorsese found them as a child on television, later met Powell, became his friend and took part in the restoration of their work. The documentary does not hide that personal tie but makes it the frame. Long passages from films including The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death and Peeping Tom are shown while Scorsese explains scene by scene how they work. It also covers why the pair went so long without their proper place in British cinema and the controversy that ended Powell's career. The documentary's value lies in showing how one director reads others. Who it's for: viewers who love classic British cinema and Scorsese's film history essays. Who it's not for: anyone who has seen none of the films discussed; the documentary refers to them constantly.
