Madonna: Madame X

Madonna's Madame X tour was played in small theatres rather than large arenas, and the audience was asked not to use phones. The concert film was shot from the Lisbon dates of that tour. On stage there are fado musicians, Portuguese drummers and rhythms brought from Latin America; political speeches and short pieces of theatre come between the songs. The film was directed by Ricardo Gomes together with SKNX, made up of Sasha Kasiuha and Nuno Xico, and Madonna both wrote and produced it. Madame X is built as a figure who keeps changing identity: spy, dancer, nun, mother. Migration, gun violence and freedom are spoken about directly. Taken this way the film is less a record of a concert than an extension faithful to the stage show's own language.
