What Man on a Tightrope Is About
Karel Cernik owns a broke little circus in Czechoslovakia and plans to take the whole company, the wagons and the animals across the border to the west. The regime is watching him, and inside his own troupe he cannot be sure who is reporting to whom. The escape will have to be staged like an act, with the circus itself as the disguise. It comes from something that happened: the Circus Brumbach got out of East Germany that way in 1950, the film moves it to Czechoslovakia, and real members of the Brumbach company appear in it. Elia Kazan made it a year after naming names before the committee, at a studio that wanted his anti-communism on the record. Fredric March takes the lead.
