What Marcello Mastroianni: I Remember Is About
In 1996 Marcello Mastroianni talks about his life as an actor. The account runs like a memoir that is at once anecdotal and reflective, moving from one subject to the next. He tells about the direction of Fellini and De Sica, about using irony in performance and about working constantly. He is diffident about prizes; he loves Rome and Paris and salutes Naples and its people. He answers the question of why anyone makes bad films. He recalls his father and grandfather, both carpenters, his mother, deaf in old age, and his brother, a film editor. About his own looks he is modest. The hundred and ninety eight minutes are given to a single conversation. Anna Maria Tatò’s Italian documentary was completed in 1997.
