What Mare Nostrum Is About
The film tells the story of a German woman spy who willingly gives her life for her country. The events take place in the Mediterranean during the First World War, with seafaring, espionage and loyalty at work all at once. The account gives spying less as an adventure than as a choice, and does not draw the woman merely as someone setting a trap. It was made toward the end of the silent period and became known for staging its sea scenes in real locations. Intertitles are used sparingly through its length and the weight lies in the image. Alice Terry and Antonio Moreno appear in Rex Ingram’s hundred and two minute film, completed in 1926.
