What The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Is About
A wealthy Argentine family has two branches, one half French and one half German. When the patriarch dies, his two daughters take their families back to Europe, each to her husband's country. Then the First World War arrives and puts the same bloodline on opposite sides of the front. For Julio, the family's charming idler in Paris, the war is where the idling stops. Rex Ingram directed the 1921 silent epic, adapted by June Mathis from the novel by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, and it was the biggest earner of its year. The tango sequence, which is not in the book at all, turned the then unknown Rudolph Valentino into a star overnight.
