What Marighella Is About
Carlos Marighella was a poet, a communist who had served in congress, and the man who took up arms after the 1964 coup. The film covers his last years: a small organisation funded by bank robberies, the seizing of a radio station, a chase with a police chief who works by torture. It is Wagner Moura's first film as director, with Seu Jorge as Marighella. After it was finished it sat unreleased in Brazil for close to two years, caught in a political fight. It swings between making a hero of him and criticising him, and shows what the violence cost.
