In Madrid at the end of the eighteenth century a young woman who sits for the painter Goya is arrested by the Inquisition. The charge is that she refused pork at an inn. The film does not centre Goya; it uses him as a figure who witnesses everything and prevents none of it. Its real interest is the Inquisition priest changing sides as the political wind turns, followed through to the Napoleonic occupation. Milos Forman directed, with Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgard. It was shot in Spain. A real warning: torture and a rape are shown directly. Historical figures are also mixed with invented events; do not look for documentary accuracy.
