Claude Lelouch takes the losers and their struggle to stay upright in defeat, Mai Zetterling the world of the weightlifters, Michael Pfleghar the women competing, Arthur Penn the pole vault, Kon Ichikawa the hundred metres and Miloš Forman the decathlon, while John Schlesinger’s section on the marathon also touches on the attack that took place during the games. Yuri Ozerov is the eighth. The hundred and ten minute German American co-production screened at Cannes in 1973 and won the Golden Globe for best documentary the following year.
