What The Firemen's Ball Is About

The firemen of a small town throw a ball for their retiring chairman and every detail of the evening collapses in turn: the raffle prizes are stolen, the beauty contest becomes a fiasco, a fire breaks out. Milos Forman cast real townspeople rather than professionals, so nothing here looks like acting. The comedy makes nobody a villain, it simply shows everyone looking after themselves a little. The authorities read it as allegory, banned it indefinitely, and Forman left the country.
