What Marni: The Story of Wewe Gombel Is About
Billy Christian's 2024 Indonesian film follows a single mother who moves her family to a remote village. Her son disappears and the villagers put it down to a spirit. The narrative goes back to the source of that belief. The figure the film is named for takes neglected children in folk tale; the film joins this to the question of neglect and makes the mother answerable too. Hannah Al Rashid appears among the cast. The horror sequences are frequent and the violence explicit. The tone is dark. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian folk horror. Who it's not for: viewers for whom violence against children would be difficult.
