Poison Sangga: The Homewrecker's Curse

Rizal Mantovani's 2024 Indonesian horror film follows a couple who begin experiencing unexplained events in their home soon after marrying. The source is traced to santet, a practice of magic in local belief, and the target here is the marriage itself. Mantovani is among the most prolific directors in Indonesian horror, and this follows his known pattern: domestic interiors, religious motifs, scares built on sudden sound. Because the genre in Indonesia works directly with local belief systems, the source of fear comes from different ground than the exorcism narratives of Western cinema. The film applies the standards of commercial horror production. The image is dark, the pacing predictable, character depth limited. What is genuinely interesting is the social weight of the idea of magic performed to break a marriage. Who it's for: those curious about Indonesian horror and about genre grounded in local belief. Who it's not for: viewers looking for original horror construction; the film takes the genre's known steps in order.
