What Mary J. Blige's My Life Is About
Mary J. Blige released My Life in 1994, and the record changed both her own career and the direction of R&B. Vanessa Roth's documentary was made for its twenty fifth anniversary, and Blige performs the album live from beginning to end for the first time. Between the songs she talks about the period she wrote them in, the hardest years of her life. Sean Combs, Taraji P. Henson and Method Man also speak. The strongest thing in it is what people who got through something by listening to that record tell her to her face; those encounters are what keep it from being a promotional film.
