What Mary's Land Is About
Juan Manuel Cotelo casts himself as a devil's advocate: his assignment is to listen to people who say they have a personal relationship or a mystical experience with the Virgin Mary and decide whether they are deluded or telling the truth. The camera travels widely, and at the centre sits Medjugorje, where claims of apparitions have continued since 1981. The film is made from inside Catholic belief. Its fictional framing looks like an inquiry, but the film is built to relay the testimonies rather than to test them, and it does not hide that either. The 2013 documentary was nominated for the Spanish film writers' circle award for best documentary in 2014.
