What My Scientology Movie Is About
Louis Theroux wants inside the Church of Scientology, the church declines, and so he tries something else: he hires actors to perform accounts given by former members. From there the documentary quietly changes subject, because the church starts filming Theroux in return and the two crews end up recording each other. Its most compelling figure is Marty Rathbun, once a senior official and now outside, whose manner while speaking is as informative as anything he says. Theroux's usual polite persistence occasionally looks like harassment here, and the film does not hide that. It ends up being about method more than doctrine.
