Hail Satan?

Penny Lane's documentary follows The Satanic Temple and answers the obvious question immediately: these people do not believe in Satan. The organisation registers itself as a religion for a single purpose, to test the privilege the state extends to Christian symbols in public space. The attempt to install an enormous Baphomet statue beside the Ten Commandments monument in Oklahoma is the main line. Lane shows both the humour of the actions and the splits inside the group, and at one point the founders have to expel a member. The real subject is not Satan but for whom religious freedom actually functions. Who it is for: viewers who like political documentary and movements built on provocation. Who it is not for: anyone who will find a mocking tone about religion uncomfortable.
