What Nuts! Is About
John Romulus Brinkley was practising medicine in a small Kansas town in 1917 when he announced that he had found a cure for impotence: a transplant of goat glands. Patients came, he made money, he became famous. Then he built a radio station, started selling his own medicines, and came close to being elected governor of Kansas. The story goes a good deal further than that. Penny Lane's documentary tells it largely through animation, with the reconstructions built on period records and court transcripts. What the film is really interested in is not the treatment but what people believe and why. It also opens the source of its own account to question. The film won a special jury award for editing at Sundance in 2016.
