What Maternal Half-Brothers Is About
The film is about two half brothers born of the same mother, one a Croat and one a Serb. The two never meet, yet both lose the people they love in ethnic clashes, and an unseen bond forms between them. The account does not present that bond as a call for peace; it shows two separate lives wounded in the same place. The film was made in 1988 and, after the war that engulfed Yugoslavia three years later, came to be read as a work that had seen that war in advance; that reading was made afterwards. Zarko Lausevic and Mira Furlan appear in Zdravko Sotra’s hundred and five minute Yugoslav film, completed in 1988.
