What McKellen: Playing the Part Is About
The documentary is built on a single fourteen-hour interview. Ian McKellen tells his own way from childhood into the theatre and on into a life spent almost entirely in public view. Joe Stephenson does not leave it as a talking-head film; he threads in photographs from McKellen’s private albums and scenes reconstructed for the camera. Two things sit at the centre of the account: the work on stage itself, and his coming out in his late forties. McKellen ties that decision to Britain in the eighties, where the AIDS crisis and the discriminatory legislation known as Section 28 made him feel he had to put his fame to some use. The film also takes in the screen stardom that arrived with Magneto and Gandalf.
