What Meet Me in St. Gallen Is About
Irene Emma Villamor's 2018 Filipino film follows three encounters spread across years between Jesse and Celeste, whose names match the characters of an American romantic comedy. Each time both are inside another life, and the timing is never right. The structure is deliberately broken: the years in between are not told, only their results seen. That lets the film show, rather than explain, why the relationship does not work. The rapport between Bela Padilla and Carlo Aquino carries it. The Swiss section adds too little, and the resolution of the last encounter is too neat. The dialogue is strong. Who it's for: viewers who like Filipino romantic drama and relationships told across time. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a reunion ending, or who will find the broken structure scattered.
