Meeting People Is Easy

Grant Gee's 1998 documentary follows the world tour Radiohead undertook after OK Computer. It is not a record of a tour but a record of erosion. Interviews in which the same questions are asked over and over, airports, hotel rooms, promotional shoots and a schedule that never ends are layered on top of each other; the band speak less and less, and the camera records that silence. Gee uses his footage as collage: sound fragments, television images and concert passages run together and none of them finish. The result is an uncomfortable document of how success itself becomes consuming. It also supplies background for anyone trying to understand the change of direction on the band's next album. Who it's for: Radiohead listeners and viewers curious about how the music industry operates. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a concert film or an orderly documentary narrative; the film is deliberately fragmentary.
