What Memories of Prison Is About
In 1936, while living the quiet life of a civil servant in Alagoas, the writer Graciliano Ramos was arrested as a communist sympathiser and imprisoned without ever being tried. He later put the road down on paper: from Maceio to the barracks at Recife, then by ship to Rio and on to the penal colony on Ilha Grande. Nelson Pereira dos Santos turned those memoirs into a film of over three hours, with Carlos Vereza as Ramos. The treatment he witnessed in the wing kept for common prisoners is the hardest part of it to watch. It played the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes and took the FIPRESCI prize.
