Rio, Northern Zone

Espírito da Luz Soares is a gifted samba composer, and none of his songs stay his. Radio producers, record companies and middlemen take the compositions, find a way to remove his name, and keep the money. The film follows his life in Rio's northern districts and his effort to get out of that cycle. Nelson Pereira dos Santos breaks with what Brazilian cinema was doing at the time: the camera leaves the studio for real neighbourhoods, the performers are local, and poverty is presented as a condition rather than decor. That stance made him one of the precursors of the Cinema Novo movement. Grande Otelo plays Espírito. One of Brazil's best-known comic actors, he takes a dramatic role here and carries the film's weight. Who it's for: Anyone interested in early Brazilian cinema, samba culture, and social realism. Who it's not for: The production constraints show, with image and sound carrying the limits of the period. The telling is also scattered in places.
