Son of Saul

László Nemes's 2015 film follows a prisoner assigned to move bodies at a death camp. He wants to bury one boy. A revolt is being prepared around him. The film locks its camera onto his face; the narrative leaves the horror out of focus and lets sound carry it. It won the Academy Award for best foreign language film. It is the director's first feature. The narrow frame and shallow focus were deliberate choices. Who it's for: those willing to face the most demanding films in the history of cinema. Who it's not for: most viewers; the subject is mass extermination and the film offers no relief.
