What Merkel Is About
The documentary tells the story of Angela Merkel for an international audience: how someone who stood outside in three separate ways, as a woman, as a scientist and as an East German, became the effective leader of the western world. The account is built on a large archive and on conversations with people who knew her closely, Condoleezza Rice and Thomas de Maiziere among them. The film neither raises her up nor passes judgement; it tries to show how the decisions were made, and how silence itself became a method. How someone who governed Germany for sixteen years could stay that long while saying so little is the account’s own question. Eva Weber’s ninety seven minute documentary was completed in 2022.
