What Midsummer's Equation Is About
Manabu Yukawa, a physicist, comes to a small seaside town to speak on a panel. The inn he stays at is run by a family whose daughter is an activist against a mining project off the coast. The inquisitive boy he met on the train turns out to be staying there too. In the morning a man is found dead on the rocks below the inn: a retired policeman. Yukawa can see it was not an accident, and what he works out gives him no relief, because the answer touches the boy. Hiroshi Nishitani directs; two hours and nine minutes, adapted from Keigo Higashino's novel. Masaharu Fukuyama plays Yukawa, a part he had already played in the television series and in Suspect X in 2008.
