Minsara Kanavu

Rajiv Menon's 1997 Tamil film follows Priya, who has decided to become a nun. Thomas, who loves her, wants to change her mind and asks his friend Deva, a dancer, for help. The plan rests on Deva trying to talk her out of it. The narrative does not go where it is expected to; a bond forms between Deva and Priya and the film inverts its own premise. Kajol, Arvind Swamy and Prabhu Deva take the leads, and the dance sequences are what the film is best known for. The music is by A. R. Rahman and the songs are still listened to. The cinematography stands out. Who it's for: those who like Tamil musical romance of the nineties. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with a woman's decision being constantly questioned; the film makes that its premise.
