What Sarvam Thaala Mayam Is About

Peter is the son of a Dalit family that makes mridangams. Making the drum is one thing; playing it turns out to be another, and when the master Vembu Iyer takes him on as a student, the master’s assistant Mani objects openly to a Dalit stepping onto a concert stage. Rajiv Menon’s film goes directly at the unwritten prohibition inside Carnatic music, at caste deciding who is allowed into an art form. A. R. Rahman wrote the score; G. V. Prakash Kumar plays Peter and Nedumudi Venu the teacher. Menon made this nineteen years after his previous feature, and it opened in February 2019 and did well.
